It’s that time again, back to school. This year is quite different though. Many students are forced to have virtual classes and study from home. Nevertheless, time moves on, and universities are eager to have their students return, even if over a computer screen.
ADKF has a great relationship with the local San Antonio colleges including, University of Incarnate Word (UIW), University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M University at San Antonio (TAMU), and Texas State University (TSU). In fact, we regularly recruit our Spring, Summer, and Fall Tax and Audit Interns from those schools. In 2020 alone, we had ten interns from those schools, cumulatively. In addition, we regularly give our time to the universities by teaching a class, speaking to a group about what it is like to be an accountant, or collaborating with the University organizations.
No matter what, if you want to become a professional accountant, you will need to attend a four-year University that offers an accounting major and course load. If you want to attain your Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, you’ll need to do your research and find a University that offers the specific courses you need to check the boxes on the CPA application, and to get 150 hours to qualify you to sit for the four-part exam.
ADKF has over 80 professional staff, including 23 CPA’s and those planning to sit for their certification, striding with pride, through the hallways (well, when we were physically in the office, that is). Each attended a range of universities both inside and outside of Texas, including California State University Fresno; Georgia State University Mississippi State University; New Mexico State; Sacred Heart - Puerto Rico; Sam Houston State University (SHSU); St Mary's University; Tarleton State; The Ohio State University; Trinity University; Texas A&M University; Texas Lutheran University; Texas State University; Texas Tech; University of Incarnate Word; University of Houston: Main Campus and Victoria; University of New Mexico (UNM); University of Louisville; University of Texas: Pan American, Rio Grande, San Antonio, and Austin (UT); and Western Kentucky University.
The eight partners are no different and have named some of the ADKF conference rooms after their own alma-maters: The largest conference room is named the Roadrunner, after the UTSA mascot for alumnus Scott Kopecky, David Doherty, Rene Garcia, and Joe Hernandez; the Lobo is named after the UNM mascot for Susan Valdez, the Longhorn conference room is named for the UT mascot for Howard Klein and retired partner Tom Akin; the Jaguar is named for University of Houston-Victoria for Jason Nelson and the Bearkat is named for SHSU for Tyson Gaenzel. One conference room is named for another beloved Texas university, the Cardinal for UIW. And of course, they could not resist naming one of the rooms after the San Antonio Spurs.
Once you graduate from college with your bachelor’s or master's degrees focused on accounting, the sky is the limit. Accounting is the language of business. Any and every business needs an accountant to help ensure they are protecting themselves from fraud, keeping the books in order, filing state and federal tax returns on time, and helping those who are not accountants understand the state of the business from a financial perspective, among other things. Whether you choose to enter private industry, where you can focus your skills on smaller segments of a business, or go into public accounting, where you’ll become a trusted advisor to numerous business men and women who will learn to rely on you for solid advice on how to make their business successful, the career is a rewarding one.
