Enroll in the IRS Online Personal Tax Account

An Executive Order – Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Account was signed into law March 25, 2025. Beginning September 30, 2025, all payments made to and from the Federal Government are to be processed electronically. This means it’s time to get on board and enroll in the IRS Online Personal Tax Account!

As of September 30, 2025, registering for the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is no longer be an option for individual taxpayers. This change is intended to guide individuals toward the IRS’s preferred payment methods, which include:

  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) – Set up directly in your tax return
  • IRS Direct Pay – Available at IRS.gov/payments
    • Credit card payments can take up to 7 days to process! Ensure you submit payment at least 7 days prior to the payment due date.
  • IRS Online Personal tax account
    • The IRS’s preferred method for taxpayers.

We also highly recommend creating and using an IRS Online Personal Tax Account as it provides many other resources and benefits including the ability to:

  • Review current and past balances
  • Make payments, review a 5-year payment history, and edit future payments
  • Check refund status
  • Receive and view copies of IRS notices and letters
  • View current and prior tax records, including:
    • Transcripts
    • Compliance report
    • Audit status
  • Approve or deny Tax Professional authorizations
    • This option can also be used for mortgage applications
  • Submit change of address
  • Submit name change
  • Enroll to receive an IP PIN (Identity Protection Personal Identification Number) or withdraw from the IP PIN program. The IP PIN is a proactive security measure.
  • Set up installment agreements for balances due
  • Apply for offer-in-compromise
  • Get copies of 1099’s and W-2’s
  • Submit more than 40 forms electronically without signature
  • Take advantage as new features are continuously being added!

This online account feature is not only highly convenient but also essential for managing your tax obligations.

Please note, only one ID.me account is needed and can be used across multiple government platforms. The government is increasingly using ID.me and is expected to require it for Social Security within the next two years.
